Why send your child to Elm Grove Lutheran School? Why send your child to a Lutheran High School? Come here a panel of former EGL students address this very issue. Friday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Music Center.
Did You Know!
- Christian Education and Beyond the parent forum scheduled for Friday, October 3 has been moved to Friday, October 17 due to a conflict for the high school representatives. This presentation will run in conjunction with the PTL Movie Night, which was also moved.
- Thank you to all the students and parents who made our Wildcat Running Club and Waukesha cross country meet a huge success. I enjoyed working with the students and instilling a love for running as a great way to stay fit and have fun! Thank you to those students who did double duty between soccer, softball and cross country. I would like to thank these middle school students for their participation this year: Hannah Arnold, Elise Halvorson, Anna McMiller, Zachary Robel, Sarah Schulz, Jené Kramer, Andrew Weymier, Ann Wilcox and Peter Li. Look for meet results in next week’s news.
- Parent-Teacher Conference Forms went home this week for Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 30 and 31. Please fill out those forms and return them to the office by Monday, October 20. Thanks for your help.
- The fall sports season is coming to an end. The girl’s softball team ended their season with a rain-out this past Tuesday. Their final record was 1-5-1. We want to thank our coaches Mrs. Tesch, Miss Ganswindt, and Mr. Weymier for all of their time and effort this season. Cross Country also ended this week with the Waukesha County Lutheran Schools Invitational here at EGLS on Thursday. We will have results of the meet next week. Thanks to Miss Anderson for all of her time and effort with the Wildcat Running Club. Please note the soccer schedule changes for next week: On Tuesday, Warcats 1 vs. Warcats-2 at 4:00 p.m. @ EGLS and then Warcats 1 vs. Hales Corner @ Hales Corner at 4:00 p.m. Warcats-2 vs. St. Martini @ Hales Corner at 5:15 p.m.
- Cub Scout Pack 64 Fundraiser continues until 10/24/2008! Ask any Cub Scout how you can purchase outstanding Cub Scout popcorn and wreaths to support the Pack's activities. Scouts will be on hand between EGL church services this weekend in the lower lobby. Scout popcorn in decorative tins makes a great gift for family, friends, business associates, employees, etc. You may also contact Cubmaster Mark Ewert at 262.790.9791.
- The musical is coming! The musical is coming! Our students in grades 3-5 are working hard on this year’s musical “Adventures in the Wide, Wide West.” You are invited to join us Friday, October 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the gym for this exciting and fun evening. What is it about? Well that’s a secret you’ll just have to join us to find out! All of our EGLS families are invited to join us for a night of music, laughter, and maybe a lesson or two. ABOUT the TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY after PENTECOST
Theme: A Feast Prepared
- highlighting the Scriptures for the week -
he LORD speaks of a feast to come; a victory yet to be revealed. (Isaiah) “On this mountain” He will show His hand in the destruction of sin, death, and hell – wiping all tears from His people, removing their disgrace, and setting before them a rich banquet. So it was that, in the fullness of time, our heavenly Father sent forth His servants to invite His guests to the wedding banquet of His Son. (Matthew) When the guests spurned His invitation, He opened up the Kingdom to one and all. He even provides the appointed apparel. Therefore, since the Lord is near, we all rejoice. (Philippians) Setting aside our anxiety, we bring our requests to the heavenly throne in petition, prayer, and thanksgiving. And the transcended peace of God stands guard over our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Monday evening (at sunset), October 13, is the beginning of the eight-day Jewish Feast of Tabernacles.
Tabernacles (Sukkot in Hebrew) is one of three pilgrimage feasts in Judaism, when all Jews want to be in Jerusalem for the celebration. EGL members and friends, however, do not have to go to Jerusalem to learn about this feast. It is coming here to Elm Grove!
Steve Cohen, Founder of The Apple of His Eye Mission Society (a Recognized Service Organization of the LCMS), will explain the meaning and application of Tabernacles at a special 6:30 p.m. service.
The term Apple of His Eye comes from the Bible. It refers to the ‘small man’ or pupil of the eye that is protected by the Lord:
For the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance. In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye ... (Deuteronomy 32:9-10)
The AOHE Mission Society exists to boldly declare Y’shua (Jesus) as the Messiah and urgently equip God’s people to do the same. Its vision and passion are to see Jewish people and Gentiles given the opportunity to consider the Biblical claims of Jesus as Messiah and respond in faith. Their Web site is www.appleofhiseye.org.
Don’t miss this very special worship service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 13, 2008. And, don’t forget to invite (and bring) your Jewish friends.

EGL’s Newest Members
On Thursday evening, August 21, 2008, four persons were received into communicant membership at Elm Grove Lutheran through the Rite of Confirmation. Pictured between Pastor Myers and Pastor Skovgaard are (l. to r.): Rob Fredrichsdorf, Austin Ahnert, Kayla Burk, & Jeff Wilinski.
All four of these newest members completed the summer “Key to Life” adult instruction course. “Key to Life” (KtL) can serve as a review of the teachings of the Christian faith (from a Lutheran perspective) or as the mandatory course of studies for EGL membership. A fall class is quickly forming. If you are interested, or know of someone who is interested, do contact one of the EGL pastors.
Don’t forget to give a hearty welcome and blessing to our newest members when you see them in public worship.
WELCOME BACK, REV. ANDRUS: This weekend we welcome back to EGL the Rev. David Andrus, Executive Director of Lutheran Blind Ministry. He will provide the message at all services and a special update briefing between the two Sunday worship services in the church nave. Please do come to hear his exciting news.
ABOUT the TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY after PENTECOST
Theme: the LORD’s Vineyard
– highlighting the Scriptures for the week –
n joyful anticipation of the harvest, the LORD Himself established Israel as His pleasant planting. (Isaiah) He spared nothing for her productivity. Yet she produced not good grapes, but bad; therefore she would be destroyed. As it was with Israel, so it is with the Church; God’s new testament people. (Philippians) Striving toward lies ahead, the church exercises all the energy He Himself supplies. She presses on to take hold of that that for which Christ Jesus has taken hold of her. We’re not there yet; still the promised prize awaits all who abide faithful to the end. On harvest day God the LORD awaits His produce. (Matthew) The vineyard He planted among Israel will bear abundant fruit – despite the original tenants’ rebellious mutiny. Though they kill His Son, He has opened the vineyard (Kingdom) to all the world. The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is the cornerstone of His church, whether Jew or Gentile.
BLOOD DRIVE AT EGL on Monday, Oct. 6, funded by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Please consider being a blood donor. We need you to take advantage of the opportunity to donate blood, right here at Elm Grove LC. on Monday, Oct. 6, 2:00-7:00 p.m., in the Christian Life Center. Please sign up on the time slot sheet on the tract rack or call Ron Wegner (262-781-6897) for an appointment time.
ABOUT the TWENTIETH SUNDAY after PENTECOST
Theme: Repentance and Faith
– highlighting the Scriptures for the week –
ot sin, but faith determines God’s response to sinners. (Ezekiel) Each person is held accountable for his own sin: if a righteous man turns to impenitent sin, he will die. On the other hand, a sinner who turns in repentance to the LORD will live; God is absolutely fair in His mercy toward fallen mankind. Those who have received mercy are merciful. (Philippians) Tenderness and compassion are the hallmarks of the company of the baptized faithful. United in love, spirit, and purpose, in humility each member of the church considers the other better than themselves. So also it is in the Father’s Kingdom. (Mathew) Not sin, but penitent faith determines our relationship with our heavenly Father. Wicked people who repent are included, while seemingly righteous people who refuse to obey are excluded. Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
ABOUT the NINETEENTH SUNDAY after PENTECOST
Theme: Surprised by Grace
– highlighting the Scriptures for the week –
he LORD is surpassingly rich in His grace. (Isaiah) He is full of mercy and abundant pardon. His ways and thoughts, higher than ours, surpass all human understanding. In our way of thinking, you get what you earn. Not so in the Kingdom of God. (Matthew) Our heavenly Father rewards all by grace; those who work long and hard receive the same mercy, love, and life as those who penitently turn to Him at the eleventh hour. It’s never too late for the love of God; we may call on Him while He is near. Thus the faithful are sustained in life and in death. (Philippians) To depart and be with Christ is the best of all; yet to remain in the body means fruitful labor in Christ. By the mercy of God, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR CHILDREN IN AFGHANISTAN NEEDED: One of our military men, Jeff Netzel, is serving our country in the U.S. Air Force and is currently stationed in Afghanistan. He wants to gather school supplies for children in Afghanistan who have no supplies. Pencils, small pencil sharpeners, crayons, crayones, sheet paper, or tablets are especially desired. Donations for shipping are also welcome. For more info or to donate, please contact Mrs. Linda Hoffmann before Sept. 24.
FALL SUNDAY MORNING ADULT CLASSES begin this Sunday, Sept. 14! Two teenage/adult classes are offered.
- “Spiritual Images in the Chronicles of Narnia.” Location: Christian Life Center.
Leader: Pr. Eric Skovgaard.
- “Revelation: A Testament of Hope.”
Location: Music Center.
Leader: Pr. Larry Myers.
ABOUT the EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY after PENTECOST
Theme: The Forgiveness of Sins
– highlighting the Scriptures for the week –
oseph's brothers feared his retaliation. (Genesis) Though they meant to harm him, God had taken their evil and turned it into good; Joseph would not repay evil with evil, but overcome evil with good. There is no limit to the forgiveness in God's heart. (Matthew) While Peter sought to set limits on forgiveness, the love of God in Christ is boundless; it calls for all to forgive those who trespass against them as they have been forgiven. So, too, it is within the church: While there may be differing pieties, there are no struggles between those who do all things to the Lord's glory. (Romans) Whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.

The Cell Phone or the Bible - I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treated our cell phone. What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? What if we gave it to children as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? What if we used it in case of an emergency? This is something to make you go, “Hmm…where is my Bible?” Oh, and one more thing, unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill! Makes you stop and think, “Where are my priorities?” And no dropped calls!
Growing in Christ Sunday School starts this Sunday Sept. 7. Come see the revised format for this year! There will no longer be an opening or treats in the Fellowship Hall. Students will go directly to their classrooms anytime after 9:20 a.m., with class beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m.

From the jacaranda capital of the world, I send you my greetings...
WEDDINGS: On Friday, Aug. 8, at 3:00 p.m., Ruth Burhop and Dan Bretl will be wed at our altar. And, on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2:00 p.m. Stephanie Mueller and Jeff Laundre will be wed. We pray God's richest blessings upon these two couples.
CHRISTIAN SYMPATHIES are extended to the family of Elmer Borchardt who died this past Sunday. A private memorial service was held on Wednesday. "I know that my Redeemer lives..."
EGL SCHOOL FAMILIES BRIEFING: With the advent of ‘no tuition’ for EGL-member school families, it is vitally important that everyone understand the implications for faithful stewardship. In order to accomplish this goal, each EGL-member school family is required to attend one of two stewardship briefings scheduled between the worship services on Sunday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 17. Each briefing begins promptly at 9:15 a.m. and ends promptly at 10:00 a.m. Again, the requirement is that each EGL-member school family attend one of these two briefings.
ABOUT the ELEVENTH SUNDAY after PENTECOST
Theme: The Treasures of the Kingdom
God set apart the Hebrews as a people for Himself. (Deuteronomy) He knew what they needed, and so He gave it. God also gives us what we need. Faced with affliction, we often ask “why?” – forgetting that in all things He works for the good of those who love Him. (Romans) Having been called, we know we were first predestined, are now justified, and will one day be glorified in the likeness of His Son. A great treasure, a pearl of high price, are all those who belong to the Kingdom. (Matthew) For the joy of our redemption, our dear Lord went and gave all He had so that He might purchase us with His body and blood to be His own. One day His angels will separate the wicked from the righteous; for now the great enterprise of the Kingdom includes one and all. May the Lord Himself give us eyes to see what He is doing in and through His church!
